How to choose a mattress
We've been helping Sydney choose mattresses since 1993. The best way to choose is to lie on a few, but it helps to know what to look for first. Here's what we talk through with people in the showroom.
1. Pick the size
Standard Australian sizes: single 92 × 187 cm, king single 107 × 203 cm, double 138 × 187 cm, queen 153 × 203 cm, king 183 × 203 cm. For couples, a queen or king gives each person more room. If you're tall, a king single, queen or king gives you 203 cm of length instead of 187. Less common sizes are on our mattress facts page, and we can often have an unusual size made.
2. Match the firmness to how you sleep
- Side sleepers: softer (plush or medium) lets your shoulder and hip sink in.
- Back sleepers: medium firm to medium supports the curve of your spine.
- Stomach sleepers: firmer keeps your hips from sinking.
Many of our mattresses come in firm, medium and plush versions of the same model, so you can compare them side by side.
3. Understand what's inside
- Bonnell spring: linked hourglass coils. Tough, supportive and good value. Our Fitzroy range.
- Pocket spring: each spring moves on its own, so you feel less of your partner moving. Contour Enhance, Bliss, Hamilton, Physio Regal and Heaven.
- Zoned pocket springs: firmer or softer zones under different parts of the body. Contour Enhance (3-zone), Bliss and Physio Regal (5-zone), Heaven (7-zone plus a layer of mini pocket coils).
- Comfort layers: latex, memory foam and gel-infused foams on top change the feel and help with pressure and temperature.
4. Set a budget (queen prices, including GST)
| Budget | Mattresses | Queen |
|---|---|---|
| Value | Fitzroy Firm, Medium or Plush (Bonnell, 5-year warranty) | $449–$649 |
| Value pocket spring | Contour Enhance Firm, Medium or Plush (made in Australia, 10-year warranty) | $649–$699 |
| Mid-range | Bliss (5-zone, gel memory foam), Hamilton (memory foam and latex), Physio Regal (latex, made in Australia) | $999–$1,299 |
| Top of the range | Sleepeezee Heaven Firm, Medium or Plush | $1,799 |
Spending more gets you more zoning, better comfort layers and stronger edges. It doesn't make a mattress the right one for you: the right firmness matters more.
5. Test it properly in store
- Lie on it for a few minutes in the position you actually sleep in.
- If you share a bed, come in together and test it side by side.
- Roll over and sit on the edge. That's where you notice partner movement and edge support.
- Try the firm, medium and plush versions of the same model back to back.
We're open 7 days, 9am to 5pm, at 1A/28 Buffalo Road, Gladesville. Visit the showroom.
6. Don't forget the base
A new mattress needs a firm, even base. Choose from drawer bases, custom upholstered gas lift and drawer bases (made to your fabric and size), or timber bed frames. Tell us what you have now and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth keeping.
7. Delivery and your old mattress
Our own team delivers on weekdays, from $59 to nearby suburbs. We can take your old mattress and base for $100 per piece and send them to a recycler. Delivery prices.
Mattress buying questions
What firmness should I choose?
It depends mostly on how you sleep. Side sleepers usually prefer plush or medium, back sleepers medium firm to medium, and stomach sleepers firm. The best test is to lie on each one in store.
What's the difference between Bonnell and pocket springs?
Bonnell springs are linked together into one unit. They're tough and good value. Pocket springs each sit in their own fabric pocket and move on their own, so you feel less of your partner moving.
How much should I spend on a queen mattress?
Our queen mattresses range from $449 to $1,799. The right firmness matters more than the price, so try a few at different prices.
How often should I rotate my mattress?
Single-sided mattresses: rotate head to foot every 2 weeks for the first 4 months, then monthly. Don't flip them. See our care guide.
Can I try before I buy?
Yes. Every mattress in our Gladesville showroom is there to lie on, 7 days a week.
Do you take the old mattress away?
Yes, $100 per piece when we deliver your new one. It goes to a mattress recycler.
